Romanian Immigration to Canada in Recent Years

Since 2020, Romanian immigration to Canada has proceeded at moderate but consistent levels, driven primarily by economic immigration programs, family sponsorship, and skilled worker streams. Romanian citizens admitted as permanent residents numbered in the low thousands annually in the early pandemic years before stabilizing, with 930 Romanians becoming permanent residents between January 2023 and March 2025. Of these, economic streams accounted for 390 arrivals, including Provincial Nominee Programs, Federal Skilled Worker, and Canadian Experience Class, while family sponsorship contributed another 390. Many Romanians settle in Ontario, particularly the Greater Toronto Area, as well as in Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia, attracted by job opportunities in skilled trades and professions, quality of life, and established community networks. Economic immigrants form a significant share alongside family reunification. The Romanian-born population in Canada reached approximately 86,770 according to the 2021 Census, while the broader Romanian-origin community stood at around 215,885 by ancestry, reflecting continued modest expansion in subsequent years.
