Bangladeshi Immigration to Canada in Recent Years
Since 2020, Bangladeshi immigration to Canada has grown steadily, fueled primarily by economic immigration programs, international student pathways, and family sponsorship. Bangladeshis admitted as permanent residents numbered in the low thousands annually during the early pandemic years before rising, with Canada welcoming over 2,700 Bangladeshi permanent residents in 2023 alone. Many Bangladeshis settle in Ontario, particularly the Greater Toronto Area, as well as in British Columbia and Alberta, attracted by job opportunities in technology, business, and skilled trades, quality of life, and strong existing community networks. Economic immigrants, including those through Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs, form the majority, supported by family reunification and transitions from study permits. The Bangladesh-born population in Canada reached approximately 70,090 according to the 2021 Census, with the broader Bangladeshi-origin community estimated at around 100,000 to 120,000, reflecting continued expansion in recent years.
