Immigration to Prince Edward Island in Recent Years
Prince Edward Island has experienced substantial population growth driven by immigration since 2020. International arrivals, including both permanent residents through the Provincial Nominee Program and the Atlantic Immigration Program as well as non-permanent residents such as temporary foreign workers and international students, significantly boosted the province’s numbers. This influx helped raise the population from approximately 155,000 in 2020 to over 180,000 by late 2024, with net international migration accounting for most of the increase amid low natural growth. Newcomers filled key roles in sectors like health care, construction, and agriculture, supporting economic expansion on the island. However, starting in 2024, both federal caps on temporary residents and provincial reductions in nomination allocations led to a sharp decline in inflows, resulting in fewer immigrants in 2025 and even a quarterly population drop by early 2026 as more temporary residents departed than arrived.
