Immigration to British Columbia in Recent Years

Since 2020, immigration has played a central role in British Columbia’s population dynamics. Following pandemic related slowdowns, the province saw a strong rebound with nearly 70,000 permanent immigrants arriving in 2021 alone, helping drive record growth in subsequent years through both permanent residents and large inflows of non permanent residents such as international students and temporary workers. This surge contributed to annual population increases exceeding three percent in 2023, the highest in decades, with Metro Vancouver attracting the vast majority of newcomers. More recently, federal reductions in temporary resident targets have led to significant net outflows of non permanent residents starting in 2025, resulting in quarterly population declines despite steady permanent immigration around 10,000 per quarter in late 2025. Overall, immigrants now make up about 29 percent of British Columbia’s population.
