Immigrants in Regina in Recent Years
Since 2020 immigration has played a major role in driving population growth in Regina and the wider Saskatchewan region with the Regina census metropolitan area emerging as an important destination for newcomers to Canada. Pandemic measures resulted in fewer permanent resident arrivals in 2020 but the numbers recovered well in subsequent years as Canada raised its immigration targets and Regina welcomed more economic class immigrants skilled tradespeople and family members.
Immigrants now form approximately 20 percent of the local population and international migration has been responsible for almost all of the CMAs recent net growth. Newcomers have put down roots in both downtown districts and newer suburban developments while adding to the regional labour market. Although challenges with housing availability and recent federal cuts to immigration levels have begun to slow the pace of arrivals the city still relies heavily on migration to sustain its long term population and economic progress.
