Will crime get worse under Mark Carney?
Take our quick poll!

Welcome to our poll on crime in Canada. Over the past 10 years in Canada, crime trends have shown a mixed trend, with an overall increase in the Crime Severity Index (CSI) since 2015, following a long-term decline. The CSI, which measures both the volume and severity of police-reported crime, rose by 2% in 2023, marking the third consecutive year of increases, driven largely by non-violent crimes like fraud (up 46% from 2008-2018), shoplifting (up 18% in 2023), and motor vehicle theft (up 5% in 2023). Violent crime rates have also risen significantly, with a 43.8% increase from 2014 to 2022, including a 30% rise in violent crime incidents over the decade, particularly in assaults, extortion (up 35% in 2023), and robbery (up 4% in 2023). However, homicide rates have fluctuated, dropping to 1.94 per 100,000 in 2023 from 2.25 in 2022, and some crimes like breaking and entering (down 5% in 2023) have declined.
