Do you think Carney’s middle-class tax cuts will benefit you personally?
Take our quick poll!

In Canada, the middle class is often defined by income, but the definition varies depending on the source and perspective. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines the middle class as households earning between 75% and 200% of the median household income after tax. Based on recent Statistics Canada data, this translates to a range of approximately $52,875 to $141,000 for a household in 2022. Alternatively, some economists, like those at TD Economics, use income quintiles, identifying the middle class as households in the second and third quintiles, with disposable incomes around $59,000 to $78,100 in 2023. Perceptions also play a role, with 42% of Canadians identifying as middle class in the 2023 Great Canadian Class Study, even if their incomes vary widely.

Over the past decade, middle-class incomes in Canada have faced challenges in keeping pace with rising costs, contributing to a sense of economic strain. Statistics Canada reports the median after-tax income for families and unattached individuals was $68,400 in 2021, showing little real growth when adjusted for inflation compared to a decade earlier. A 2024 TD Economics report highlighted that middle-income households (second and third quintiles) saw real disposable income lag behind inflation, while their debt-to-income ratios rose significantly due to higher borrowing costs and stagnant earnings growth. Overall, while nominal incomes have risen, the purchasing power and economic security of the middle class have been eroded by inflation, housing costs, and wealth disparities, which widened to their largest gap since 2015.
