Largest Cities in Canada -2016

According to the 2016 Census, Canada’s population reached 35,151,728 –an increase of 3,538,738 people over 2006.

Over the past decade, the number of Million Cities (with at least one million inhabitants) in Canada remained unchanged –yet these cities became more crowded.



In 2016, 55% of the population resided in the top 10 most populated Census Metro Areas (CMAs): Toronto (16.9%), Montreal (11.7%), Vancouver (7%), Ottawa-Gatineau (4%), Calgary and Edmonton (3.8% each), Quebec (2.3%), Winnipeg (2.2%), Hamilton (2.1%) and Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo (1.5).

Over the last decade, the top 15 CMAs saw population increases. In fact, Calgary registered the highest annual population growth rate of 2.9% followed by Edmonton (2.8%).

The cities with the lowest annual population increases were St. Catharines-Niagara (0.4%), Halifax and Hamilton (0.8% each).
