Since 2020, immigration has become the primary engine of population growth in New Brunswick after decades of stagnation. The province welcomed roughly 40,000 permanent immigrants between 2021 and early 2025, with annual admissions climbing sharply from about 2,700 in 2020-21 to nearly 15,000 in 2023-24. This surge, combined with a substantial rise in temporary foreign workers and international students, helped drive record population increases of over 20,000 per year in 2022 and 2023. New arrivals have supported labor market needs in key sectors while boosting overall demographic trends, though federal reductions in immigration targets have begun to moderate inflows in 2025.
